At the 19th and 20th of May 2011 the FSP (research group) Photography and Media of the FH Bielefeld – University of Applied Sciences is hosting a symposium about contemporary photography from eastern europe in collaboration with the Wüstenrot Foundation. Photographers and scientists, curators and professors from Ljubljana, Moskow, Bratislava, Prag, Posnan, Budapest, Daugavpils, Vienna, Warsaw, Wiesbaden, Berlin, Hamburg and Belgrade have been invited to lecture in Bielefeld.

The great diversity of the artistic positions is an invitation to compare and to explore. Mit Einrichtung der Studiengangs Foto-/ Film-Design am Fachbereich Gestaltung der Fachhochschule Bielefeld im Jahre 1979 fand das erste Bielefelder Fotosymposium statt. Die Veranstaltung eröffnete die Diskussion um ein praxisorientiertes Hochschulstudium mit seinen vermittelten Sparten Foto-Design, Bildjournalismus und Künstlerische Fotografie. Die Symposien waren von Anfang an als jährliches Periodikum geplant. Dabei ging es besonders um Beiträge zu aktuellen Fragestellungen der Theorie und Praxis der Fotografie und der ihr verwandten Medien sowie um Austausch und Dialog zwischen Theorie und Praxis in ihrer gleichrangigen Bedeutung für die Medienentwicklung. → In seiner 30-jährigen Geschichte wurde das Symposium formal und inhaltlich weiterentwickelt und hat, dem Ansatz der konzeptionellen Gestaltung folgend, stets künstlerisch-gestalterische Praxis und Theoriediskurs in Beziehung zueinander gesetzt. Dies geschieht in der Überzeugung, dass einerseits künstlerisch-gestalterische Strategien theoretischer Reflexion bedürfen und andererseits erst auf der Grundlage einer fundierten theoretischen Reflexion und Auseinandersetzung innovative Bildfindungsprozesse in der künstlerisch-gestalterischen Praxis möglich sind. → Mit diesem Konzept haben sich das Bielefelder Fotosymposium, der gleichnamige Forschungsschwerpunkt (FSP) Fotografie und Medien sowie die Studienrichtung Fotografie und Medien des Diplom-Studiengangs Gestaltung bzw. der neuen Studiengänge BA-/MA-Gestaltung in dernationalen und internationalen Hochschullandschaft im Bereich der Fotografie in Theorie und Praxis ein beachtliches Renommee

Die erfolgreiche Akkreditierung des Masterstudiengangs Gestaltung, das kooperative Promotionsverfahren mit der Fakultät für Linguistik und Literatur-wissenschaft der Universität Bielefeld und der FSP Fotografie und Medien gelten als Indikatoren für die hohe Qualität der akademischen Ausbildung in Theorie und Praxis am Fotografie-Standort Bielefeld. Nicht zuletzt aufgrund dieses Renommees konnten sich in der Geschichte des Symposiums zahlreiche Kooperationen mit nationalen und internationalen Partnern entwickeln. → Das Bielefelder Sym-posium über Fotografie und Medien richtet sich dabei an unter-schiedlichste Publikumskreise. Forscher, Experten, Wissenschaftler und Doktoranden unterschiedlichster Disziplinen, die zum Thema Visualität und Bildlichkeit arbeiten und andere fachkundige Vertreter des Fachs Fotografie in Theorie und Praxis, Fotokünstler, Foto-journalisten, Studierende von Hochschulen für Fotografie und angrenzender Medien, Studierende von Universitäten, die sich mit Fotografie und Medien auseinandersetzen und allgemein am Thema Interessierte sind zu diesem öffentlichen Forum herzlich eingeladen.
